Brief article from NOLA's Time Picayune about the Down show
Down, the ultra-heavy local all-star band, has not hit its hometown since the 2002 Voodoo Music Festival. Featuring former Pantera vocalist Philip Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown, COC guitarist Pepper Keenan, Crowbar guitarist Kirk Windstein and Eyehategod drummer Jimmy Bower, Down released two albums before going on extended hiatus as its members dealt with all manner of personal drama. Anselmo went into seclusion following the December 2004 murder of his former Pantera band mate, guitarist Darrell Abbott; he also had major back surgery. By this spring, he was ready to rev up Down again. "One day Phil showed up at my house," Keenan said this week. "I hadn't seen him in three years. We discussed getting it going again. Down was a valuable band, not just to us, but to other people. After all we'd been through, we needed to jam again."
With little fanfare and no record label backing, Down embarked on a month-long, sold-out European tour in May. "We decided to blow everybody off and go play music," Keenan said. "The kids aren't stupid -- they showed up in droves. Down started as an underground thing. It still works."
Keenan and company look forward to rocking a local crowd again Saturday at Tipitina's. "There's lots of roofers and pipe-fitters here that are working hard," Keenan said, "and they'll appreciate a heavy show."
